Alone this Christmas? Some Ideas to Bring a Smile

Being alone on Christmas has to be horrible for many. I can’t imagine how lonely it must feel on this day each year if you are alone. So, I’ve come up with a Movie Marathon List to hopefully pull you out of the Christmas blues, that you can enjoy this most special of days, and I’ve thrown in a few additional ideas as well.

Before I get to the movie selections, though, I just want to say that you are loved and valued. You may not think so, but I know that somewhere in this world there is at least one person whose life you have impacted for the better. I hope you can take comfort in knowing that they exist, and that they care about you. Also, I care about you … whoever you are, reading this post. I’m thinking of you, and praying for you as we bring this year to a close. I want you to know that you can do things for yourself on Christmas; but, leading up to Christmas, you can still do things for others as well … and I promise that nothing in this world provides greater comfort and joy than knowing that you have given of yourself to others in need, or helped someone through a difficult time. You may want to visit a homeless shelter and take blankets to those who are cold, or ask your church (or local church if you don’t have a church family of your own) if there is a family in need this Christmas that you could help. You might be able to make a few Christmas wishes come true for their children this holiday. I know this post comes a little late in the season to plan these things, but sometimes, the best laid plans can be a bust, and last minute decisions are golden.

If you are alone on Christmas day, how about we make the day special for “You.” Let’s start by planning a holiday meal you will enjoy preparing. You can prepare some favorite dishes from your childhood, or bake some Christmas cookies (that’ll definitely make your home smell delicious!), and do it all in your pajamas. No having to entertain family or friends, no having to get all dressed up, no piles of dirty dishes to clean – well, maybe your own. You can take a nap or a walk if you feel so inclined. If you have a pet or pets, they are your family, and I know that cuddling with you is all they live for. So, there’s always that. And if you aren’t into watching movies, grab that book you’ve been meaning to read, kick up your feet, and relax.

I know some of you are alone by choice. Others, alone by no choice of your own, or it just happened to work out that way this year. Some of you are with family, but you’ve lost a loved one or had a break-up, so even though you are surrounded by family, you feel alone. I know how tough it is, especially, to lose a loved one during the holidays. Sometimes, even in the most difficult of circumstances, we have to forge through the best we know how. As someone who has suffered with depression, I know that this time of year, especially, can be incredibly difficult. I send you virtual (((Hugs))) and hope that maybe something here will bring a glimmer of a smile to your difficult day.

You’ve planned your meal, maybe baked some cookies, and maybe even an Apple Pie for dessert. There is nothing wrong with preparing a feast for yourself. It will keep your hands busy, and the result will be delightful … and likely provide you some nice leftovers for several days. I think you might want to put on your warmest and fussiest socks, kick up your feet, turn on the tube, make some hot cocoa or hot tea or pour yourself some red wine, and veg out in your most comfortable chair or recliner, or relax on your sofa – blankets and pillows at hand – and let the movies or music or your book carry you away.

What follows below are some of my Favorite Christmas Movies. Some are classics, and some are fairly new, but all make me smile. And although I may watch them with my Big Bear, I have watched them alone too. I hope they brighten your day in some way.

1. The Polar Express

We love this film! Ever since it first came out, we now watch it every year. Tom Hanks plays multiple characters and is amazing. Although animation has improved since this was released, it is still excellent. I highly recommend it.

2. The Family Stone

OMG! I LOVE this movie!!! You will love it too!!! It is funny and serious, sad and laughable, all wrapped up in one movie.

3. Home Alone

I know, we all like this one, but honestly, it’s a good one, and I certainly hope that you don’t have burglars wandering around your house. And if you do, then there are a few good ideas in this movie for your consideration. I don’t think they had property cameras and home alarm systems when this movie was made.

4. A Boy Named Christmas

This is a remarkable movie. And it will become one of your holiday favorites.

5. The Christmas Chronicles

I think this movie has become one of my all time favorites since it first released in 2018. When you thought that another really great Christmas movie could not be made, they outdid it with this one. Enjoy!

6. The Christmas Chronicles 2

You’ll have to follow up with this next movie in The Christmas Chronicles. Another fun story! I’ve got to admit, Kurt Russell plays a great Santa!!!

7. White Christmas

And what is Christmas without White Christmas?!!! Vermont anyone?

8. A Christmas Carol (1984) with George C. Scott

I’ve never been a fan of the story until I saw this movie adaptation of The Christmas Carol with George C. Scott. Love it! I know you will too! Bah Humbug

9. It’s a Wonderful Life!

And it is, it truly is a wonderful life. What would Christmas be without this classic masterpiece to remind us that our life has meaning. Personally, I love old movies, and this is truly one of my favorites of all time. And there really are Angels in this world. They are all around us. Sometimes, God may appoint you to be someone’s Angel. It’s possible.

10. The Most Wonderful Time of the Year

It’s a Hallmark Movie you will actually fall in love with. Absolutely my favorite, and believe me, I’ve watched hundreds of Hallmark movies. I actually go searching online for this movie every year to see where it is playing (Hallmark, Netflix, Prime, YouTube, …) The chemistry and dynamic between all the characters is great, and I love Henry Winkler!

11. The Christmas Train

I love this movie with Dermot Mulroney, Danny Glover, and Kimberly Williams-Paisley (you know, Father of the Bride. She’s married to Brad Paisley). A wonderful story! I’d love to go on a train ride some day. Maybe not one that gets stuck on its tracks, though. LOL

12. Miracle on 34th Street (1947)

What would Christmas be without this classic?!!! I love the original and watch it every year. And every year I want to pound that ol’ therapist or whatever he is, with Santa’s cane.

I’m wishing you a Very Merry Christmas, warm feet, a happy heart, good health, and all that your heart desires this Christmas. May you feel the joy of the season, and find comfort in the little things, now and in the coming new year too.

Love,
